Let's say an EXTREME ectomorph wants to slow down his metabolism (possibly perma-stun it for the night), what's the best way to go about doing this? I'm currently sitting at 118 lbs. If I know my body (which I already do), going to sleep will result in me waking up the next morning (at noon) with NOTHING to show; I'll be 112 lbs once again. What advice can you guys offer me? Cause my original plan was to drink myself into oblivion and pound my system with chicken before going to sleep. But I thought I'd run it by you guys first.

*Edit* Nevermind. I just weighed myself and I'm back down to 112 lbs. I just spent 25 bucks, in food alone, for nothing.

Well if you want to gain weight, the best way is by eating more. Get your TDEE (amount of calories you need daily to maintain your current weight) from HERE, and aim to eat around 500 more calories a day. It's pretty difficult to eat that in one sitting, so spread it out over something like 5-7 meals a day.

You should also remember that your weight is going to fluctuate during the day, between eating, drinking, sweating, pissing, shitting etc. so really small weight gains or losses aren't really worth talking about.

This. At the time when I wanted to gain weight, I kept up my regular meals but gradually added an extra meal or two, getting up to 5 or 6 meals a day. These extra "meals" though, for me, mainly comprised of high-energy/protein drinks and bars. I gained 15 lbs in a few weeks. However, now that I concentrate more on strength than on size, I've lost much of that weight but my strength has been static...I'll probably pick up that extra meal thing again soon if I feel the need. I would suggest slowly intaking more. I felt at times like I was going to throw up (I can post a link to Scott Mendelson's testimony on this if you like...and if I can find it) from eating more, but wulf it down anyway so long as it's not going to come back up again...Diet is 50% of the story for bulking up. What is your workout routine like, or, if you haven't tried it yet, what will it look like? Bulk minus that "jacked" look is going to call for powerlifting whereas toning is going to demand less weight.

If anything, the workouts themselves are the easy part. :P

I keep getting conflicting information. -_-'

My co-workers keep telling me that the more meals that I eat in a given day (1 meal every 2 hours) the faster my metabolism is going to be. According to them, I need to eat ONE HUGE 2,600 meal in ONE SITTING. Is there any truth to this?

There are several reasons why you get conflicting information; one of them may be due to what is known as "somatotype" (body type). I'm not sure on the validity of this relatively new term, but the basic idea is that people have bodies that will react differently to stimuli regarding fitness (routines, diet, etc.). That is, you have to find your body type before so you can tailor diet and working out to fit your type.

I have to apologize. I've never heard of the one huge meal a day bit, so I can't help you there... This is one of the few areas where I have almost exclusively personal experience as opposed to knowledge and learning. I should look into that though.

One huge meal a day? Never heard that either, you must also understand that your body needs time to process what you eat, protein etc. Thats why its better to spread out your intake.

No it's complete nonsense, meal frequency hardly makes any difference to metabolism. In your case isn't the issue that you can't keep food down? Didn't you plan to see a doctor for it this year? What happened to that?

I've started up regular cardio recently too. I've been using a skipping rope I picked up cheap ages ago. It's quite elegent in the sense that I've been doing it indoors (haven't pissed off the neighbours yet it seems), I'm working up to 20 minutes, but at the minute I'm flattened after about 10 -12.

Also, I'm up to 150kg on the Deadlift now, which surprizingly was easier than I expected for a good set of 5 this morning. My Squats are still progressing nicely too. However I am beginning to plateau on the Bench and Military Press it seems, I've been stalling quite a bit on those lately.

Not anymore. I've been forcing myself to eat these days and to my surprise, I don't suffer from the IBS symptoms anymore. It's either all the alcohol that I'm consuming or it's the fact that I've been over-exposing myself to stress in general that I don't feel it half as much anymore.

I've been putting off seeing my family physician, hoping that I could just fix the problem myself; But I have an unexplained weight loss problem (I'm placing my money on a possible Hyperthyroidism problem) that needs to be investigated. So... I'm gonna call on Monday and try to set up an appointment.

150kg!!, I wish I was that strong!!, I use mainly machine weights, but I couldn't lift anywhere near 150kg, and my legs are stronger than my upper body. At the gym I work out at, I am amazed at some the weights some of the muscleheads can lift.

With regards to cardio, I do a lot of HIIT training on the treadmill.

Assuming, and we hope you resolve your weight issue, may I ask what is your goal/ideal weight?, I recall you mentioned that you currently weigh 50kg?

Well your legs should be stronger than your upper body. There would be something wrong if they weren't. Your legs, in particular, the Glutes and Quads are among the strongest and most powerful muscles in your body.

You should ditch the machines and opt for free weights in the form of heavy compounds, makes for much better strength formation, as they all enlist muscles you don't hit when you use the machines.

This. Also, machines can lead to more injuries than free weights.

But what do I know. I just do pushups 3 days a week. And walk a bit.

started using free weights about a week ago, first time i've been to the gym for a few months, and first time using freeweights to any real extent. mostly due to my friend signing up to the gym I go to, and he's quite into the free weights, being a competitive swimmer.

was expectedly sore this week, but cleared up by thursday.

i'm somewhat demoralised by my performance. I can do about 5 reps of 150lbs on the bench press, which is surprisingly difficult. I could do a lot more on machines, where I was just pushing for the most part. It seems the effort of stabilisation drains my strength quicker than the thrusting itself. I tried deadlift today for the first time, managed 3 reps of 220lbs (100kg) although I think grip was the main problem, went and got gloves. my friend says my form has improved a fair bit from last week, though. and it could be worse - an acquaintance has also started going, and apparently needs to use 10lb weights when doing chest press, and his form is all over the place.

I'm 51.0kg to be exact. But my current goal/ideal weight is 125 (135 if I could manage it); unfortunately, I seriously doubt that my body is even capable of accomplishing such a feat. Honestly... the highest I've ever gotten was 121 after I had spent an entire week trying to bulk up. But then I got sick with a flu and dropped down to 106. I've been fluctuating between 106 and 114 for quiet a while now...
