I've realised as an adult how much my privacy and personal space were invaded and how crammed together my house was. My mother was a socially awkward woman and I wonder if this had any effect on me. She would regularly watch tv for about 8 hours a day and it was very socially awkward to see her do this.

Im sorry if this post seems ridiculous or silly.

You actually make me think about the fact that for the most of my life I've never have my own room. If you live with a poor family in rented houses with only two main rooms, your bedroom is also your parent's bedroom or the dinner/living room. So I also sufferd from that lack of privacy and personal space.

Some of the work in therapy made me realize that my parents have a really poor sense of boundaries. One time I was visiting in my hometown. For whatever reason I decided to stay at my parents'. One morning, I was touching myself when my dad barged in without knocking. I yelled at him, "Dude! Knock!"

That was me asserting my boundaries. Something I never learned how to do as a kid. And it's a bigger deal when you realize that my dad is a big, imposing man.

That is why I favor staying in hotels when I visit.
