focus on one object. dont try to force other thoughts out of your head, acknowledge they are there and then set them aside, until you only have that one object.

What Fonduman said is good. I use the breath going in and out of my nose and throat.

How long should you do it for each day? I'm also in the process of detoxing from marijuana and cutting back on the drinking this semester.

If you can find a float tank to use, this will work like meditation on steroids. It will speed up the process of learning how to center yourself and find your inner quiet. If not, start with this:

Just sit back, put headphones on, and listen to this while taking long, deep breaths until it stops. Try it a few times a day, most importantly at least once in the morning, before you fill your head with daily bullshit. Let whatever thoughts arise come to the surface, then escape like vapor.

Note how the experience changes over the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the answers guys. I'll update how it's working in a few weeks. This is part of my plan to add some structure to my life and try to get into a daily routine of working out/running, eating healthy, and talking to lots of girls trying to filter out the large amount of whores.

The harder you try, the harder it becomes. Like kunu said, the less you do the more you do. It's not something you can "do," it's something that just happens spontaneously.
Here's what I do.
First posture. I usually sit in a chair but you can also cross your legs if you so please, hands on knees, back straight but comfortable, ideally eyes open, but in the beginning it's easier to have them closed. It's up to you. I like to stare at something and eventually stare at nothing. Enter a sort of 1000 yard stare. Zone out.

My favorite method is to lightly focus on breathing. Don't focus too much, like "now I'm breathing in, now I'm breathing out," put about 25% thought into it. The mind is a lot like an ocean. Thoughts come and go like waves come and go. It's not something you can ever stop, but it can be calm or violent. So let thoughts come and go rather than dwelling on them. Calm your mind, breath in and out, just as your thoughts come and go. The breathing reminds me to let thoughts come and go just as air comes and goes from my lungs.

In between each breath there is a gap. The same is true of thoughts. What you're trying to do now, is lengthen that gap between each thought. That "thoughtlessness" is meditation.

Don't try to send your mind here or there, but be in the moment. As it is said "eat when you eat, sleep when you sleep." Be neither alert or relaxed but somewhere in between. Don't expect some "aha now I'm meditating moment," visions, crazy experiences, etc. It's simplicity is it's beauty.

If you're really having trouble try sitting (meditating) for 5 minutes, then take a break for a minute but try to maintain your level of self awareness. Then sit again for 5 minutes. Sometimes meditation can come during the break if you're trying to hard while sitting.
