Okay, let's hear your argument. Why is the current state of democracy so great?

Why? If you're going to say things like:-

It would be helpful to know why you think that.

I have stated my arguments and stated why I believe them, yet no one's given any kind of argument for democracy. Everyone just seems to say 'It's better'. I can understand why people like the be in control of their lives. But most people listen to any politician who says 'Lower taxes' or similar, and then complain about low pay in the public sector.

Nowadays is virtually no different to before the revolution. You still have wars fought over petty things, you still have high taxes, you still have the poor on the streets, you still have the 1% screwing over the 99. The only politicians I've ever respected are what I've heard of the early American ones, and Winston Churchill (although I admit that information may be biased). I haven't supported any of the Prime Ministers of this country since I was born, none seemed to know what they were doing, and with Blair, he was too much under America's thumb to be of any use. It could just be my limited viewpoint, but I just can't see that Parliament cares. The royals, however, do. And that makes a huge difference.

Being half "Brit" here, I have to say it is a time of celebration for the UK!

What a milestone!

The Uk has always had better luck with their queens (Victoria, Elizabeth I)

God save the queen! Happy for you guys over there!

I won't "toast" because I am a Yank, and I grew up in the area where General Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga to a bunch of rag-tag Americans in 1777....BUT cheers to you guys!

what the hell has she ever done to deserve any respect??

It is rather lame than Britain still has a monarchy in this day and age. why should taxes go to paying for a family for no other reason than being born into that family?
I am all for the abolishment of monarchy where ever it still remains, even if the monarchy is ceremonial.

I've made my arguments for a monarchy many times on this forum. I hate the fact it's ceremonial and that the Queen has no real power. Tried to change that in the last election, but because this country is so obviously not a democracy, I had no chance of making my voice heard.

Nope, he's still Heir Apparent

so you want to go back to a time when kings and queens could do as they pleased and peasants were walked upon by aristocrats? :x

Yeah, because current politicians are bound by moral codes like the American Constitution which prevents them from being assholes

The reason I want the Queen to rule is because she, as well as Charles, William et al seem to actually care about us peasants, as opposed to parliament. Really, can you see David Cameron putting on a huge concert, with the biggest names in the past 60 years, for FREE? It's a real shame the royals are unable to do much more than that.

Also, if you want a wardrobe built, are you going to get it from a guy who has only just gone into the profession after a few years at college, or are you going to get it from the guy who has been born into a long line of carpenters?

Sure, they could easily abuse their powers, but the same can be said of ANYONE you give that responsibility to [godwin]Hitler[/godwin]

current politicians are corrupt because the foundations of the current nominal democracies in America and Britain are based upon the same principles as the prior monarchies, that is that the rich get away with what they shouldn't. this current system is far from anything I would regard as acceptable but even the current system is significantly better than how things were when there were kings and queens ruling. there are still great injustices in the court systems, but when monarchies were in power court systems were basically just for show, anyone the monarch deemed an enemy of him/herself but called the enemy of the state would be done away with and none or very little attempt made to actually justify the prosecution.

 to the concert being free! nothing in this world is free, the royal family paid for it with tax payer money.

as for your wardrobe example, kings and queen have no inherent skill in managing a country, for hundreds of years all the skill needed to run the country came from minsters and other appointed officials, minsters not monarchs are the people with the skills required for nation management. if the royal family doesn't know jack about how to run a country!
and no there is a big difference in between a monarchs power to abuse, and for instance the prime minster or presidents ability to abuse, both groups will and probably do abuse power, but there is a whole system built to monitor elected officials performance while there are none for monarchs, a president can be removed from office, but a Monarch can not unless by a coup or revolution.

our aim should be to refine democracy rather than take a big step backwards to monarchy, for which many people died to prevent.

there are more reasons for to abolish the monarchy, just a few are listed in this Wikipedia link:

It is not great in the US because our politicians are bought and paid for by the multinational corporations.

We were not intended to be a democracy, but a constitutional republic where our representatives would serve a
term or two, then resign back to their previous life's as citizens working for a living.

Now we have many career politicians who have never worked an honest days wages in their life's, who do the
bidding of the huge mega-corporations, not the people.

I can understand the cultural importance of this event for the people of Britain (probably mostly in England). However, MAN, the royals are the descendants of some of the most blood thirsty, evil, tyrants to ever curse the surface of the earth. I'm certainly no communist, but the Bolsheviks had it right, people like that need to be rounded up and shot quickly and unceremoniously. The people should not be beholden to a family of parasites. I would say the same for many of the politcal families in the US too.

I never got most why English (and it tends to be the English more than the Scots, Welsh, or Northern Irish) worship the ground the royal family walk on. The fact that you've an unelected person as your Head of State who's only their for their blood would annoy me, but to each their own.

After our discussion on capitalism I thought we would never agree but you're dead right here.

It's also a fact that presidency is equally superfluous in many countries, Germany is probably the most glaring example. The main difference is perhaps the splendour associated with monarchy, regalia and so on.
